Frecciarossa vs. Italo: Which Train Should You Book?

  • Same stations in major cities: Both Frecciarossa and Italo serve Roma Termini, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Venezia Santa Lucia, Milano Centrale, Napoli Centrale, Bologna Centrale, and Torino Porta Nuova.
  • Seat reservations are automatic: Every high-speed ticket in Italy (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, and Italo) comes with an assigned carriage (carrozza) and seat (posto) QR code—you do not need to stamp or validate high-speed digital tickets at green platform machines.
  • Class equivalents: Trenitalia's four classes are Standard, Premium, Business, and Executive; Italo's are Smart, Prima Business, and Club Executive. Upgrading from Standard/Smart to Business/Prima when booking early often costs only €6–€12 extra and includes wider leather seats and a welcome espresso + snack.
