Cash & Card Tips for Italy (EUR €)

  • Always choose to be charged in EUR (€): When an Italian card terminal or ATM asks whether to charge you in your home currency (USD/GBP/CAD) or in EUR (€), always select EUR. Accepting "guaranteed conversion" (Dynamic Currency Conversion) adds a 4%–8% hidden markup.
  • Use official bank ATMs (Bancomat): Withdraw Euro cash only from ATMs attached to real Italian banks (Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit, BNL, Monte dei Paschi, Poste Italiane) and avoid standalone blue/yellow tourist ATMs that charge €5+ withdrawal fees and 10%+ exchange markups.
  • Contactless is accepted by law: Italian merchants, taxis, cafés, and ticket machines are legally required to accept contactless card payments (POS) for any amount, though keeping €30–€60 in small €5/€10/€20 notes and €1/€2 coins is handy for city tourist taxes (tassa di soggiorno), rural buses, and church candle boxes.
